Mobius Integrated Systems, a University of Michigan start-up emerging from the Electrical Engineering Department, recently attended the Babcock/Eno River Capital second annual elevator pitch competition. The event took place on March 31 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and was organized by Wake Forest University’s Babcock School of Management. The competition attracted teams from as far west as California and as far north as Manitoba, Canada. Twenty-eight teams competed in all.

The competitors were primarily second-year MBA students. Mobius was unique in the competition, being represented by Ph.D. Candidate and CEO Michael McCorquodale as well as Ph. D. Candidate and CTO Keith Kraver. Though the Mobius business concept is centered on semiconductors and MEMS technology, competitors’ concepts ranged from service companies to dot-coms.

The format of the competition included two elevator rides up to the top floor of the Wachovia Center, the downtown headquarters for Wachovia Bank. Each ride was timed and the participants were allowed two minutes to pitch their businesses to a different venture capitalist. After each team completed their rides, five finalists were chosen based on an average score for the two rides. Mobius was one of these five finalists.

The Mobius team found it to be an invaluable experience as well as great practice for their road ahead as they are now actively seeking capital investments.
