Question of the Week

Many great responses this week, Lloyd Carr's future, for better or worse, is a hot button issue. In 2006, Lloyd Carr made over $1.5 million in salary and incentives; less than both Jim Tressel, of Ohio State, and Pete Carroll, of USC. Though it has long been rumored that Lloyd will retire at year's end, the 5th season in a row with an embarrassing loss is too much for some fans to stomach. Interestingly, one reader pointed out that the last time a Division I-AA national championship coach (Appalachian State has won the last 2) was hired by a large football school, the coach was Jim Tressel and the school was Ohio State. With our loss to Oregon this weekend, and the Big 10 schedule looming ahead, Lloyd Carr is likely to make for interesting discussion.
- Between his string of losses to Oh#o St@te, Bowl Games, and now App State...he should look for a coaching job in Div III. Is Appalachian State's Coach available??
- He should have to run around The Diag, and beg for forgiveness, along with any football player receiving a scholarship.
- Our boys just looked unprepared! This isn't [Lloyd's] 1st misstep, either - 2007 Rose Bowl, anyone? Not playing Tom Brady when he was here? I think they should tie his compensation to his performance at the very least.
- This school's obsession with football is: 1) really embarrassing and 2) seriously contributes to the school's reputation of having a less than first-class academic environment [Editor's Note: We have top 10-business, law, medical, public health, and public policy programs; if we're not first class, what are we?]
- Coach Carr has run this program with dignity and class for over a decade, and it's clear his retirement is coming soon. Let him ride into the sunset as Bo did; he's earned it despite Saturday's embarrassment.
- Carr's career record is 113-37, including a national championship. Carr should, and did, take all the responsibility for the ASU loss, but I feel that nothing needs to be done to Carr. He's embarrassed, the team is embarrassed, and to humiliate further, or dock his pay would only complicate matters. He's run a clean program and was one play away (at OSU) last year from playing for a national championship. I feel one humiliating loss in 13 years isn't enough to fire one of the Big Ten's all time winningest coaches.
- He should be fired. Lloyd Carr would have been a great coach in the 1930's but he is not capable of leading a team in this era. He does not inspire his team and he does not understand how to score points. Michigan cannot rely upon a sense of entitlement that comes with the tradition and top-notch recruits the school is known for. Schools like Boise State and Appalachian State deserve to win despite their brands and locations, they play smart, come to win, and take risks. Michigan should look to the example of USC to see how a top school reinvented themselves. It started with finding a talented and inspirational coach like Pete Carroll. Maybe Appalachian State's Coach is applying for jobs....
