The Michigan Journal of Business, brainchild of BBA Senior William Moon and BBA Program Director Scott Moore, published its first edition the week of January 21st. The Michigan Journal of Business is the nation's first academic journal launched by a top-ranked business school. The inaugural edition will be distributed to around 150 schools in the United States and abroad; the Journal's international distribution will allow it to disseminate scholarly research by undergraduates on an international scale previously unheard of. Under the guidance of Moon, the Journal's Editor-in-Chief, top U.S. business schools, liberal arts colleges, law schools and university libraries will receive copies for reference.

Academic journals, long the realm of established academics and doctorate candidates, have found a place at the Ross School of Business. The MJB contains original research, scholarly debate, and other papers of academic interest crafted by undergraduate students. Papers are submitted from around the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom from top universities. For its first edition, the Journal received submissions from institutions such as Harvard College, the Wharton School of Business, and the London School of Economics. The papers published in the inaugural edition cover a range of business disciplines and theories. Pieces in the first copy of the Journal include an examination of the relationship between the Bhagavad Gita and Edward Freeman's Stakeholder Theory, an article about the counterfeit goods market's potential, an assessment of performance in the PGA tour, and a study of New York City rent prices.

In order to establish its credibility and reputation, the Journal enacted a rigorous process for submitted materials. Moon and his select team of Senior and Associate Editors sorted through thirty-one lengthy submissions on topics as far ranging as finance, business ethics, business law and economics, amongst others. Editing the materials required a substantial knowledge of the paper's discipline and the application of statistics. Despite sifting through the papers for hours, selecting papers was not easy; ultimately, only four out of thirty-one papers were approved for an acceptance rate of around 13%. Regarding the submission process, Moon said, "Most highly prestigious business journals like the Harvard Business Review…have a selection rate of around 10-15%. Because we were able to attract so many high quality papers, we had the luxury of publishing work that actually adds value to the literature [instead of simply providing a competition for submitting writers]." To aid the editorial board with the papers, faculty members at Ross provided minor oversight and more in-depth business knowledge during the review process.

Even as the first edition released, the Journal staff began sifting through submissions for its second edition (the journal is published bi-annually). Copies of the Journal's inaugural edition are available at the Kresge Library and accessible online at the Journal's website www.michiganjb.org.
