In the second largest student-run event in Ross BBA history, the BBA/SGA Alumni Relations Committee succeeded in delivering the extensive alumni database to the feet of BBA sophomores. On Friday, February 8th, over 160 students signed up to hear five alumni speak about their experiences in industries such as finance, marketing, advertising, consulting, and retail. After the speaker series, the event broke for a one-hour networking reception where students were able to interact with an additional twelve alumni who traveled to Ann Arbor from across the country.
The event served as a type of career exploration opportunity for sophomore students who were seeking exposure to various industries before honing in on their desired concentrations. According to BBA junior and Alumni Relations Committee president Amanda Rosenhaus, the event also functioned as a way to "teach sophomores the skills required to network successfully, because they really don't get much practice before the job search begins junior year." From the perspectives of various members of the Alumni Relations Committee, the team's motivation for the event was to do something that would have a lasting impact on BBA sophomores and to teach them skills that they could carry forward with them after their time at Ross.
The unprecedented success of the evening has caused the committee to consider making the Alumni Relations Networking Event an annual occurrence. The success of the event, says Rosenhaus, was due to a "highly dedicated and motivated committee of about 12 students who met and exceeded all of the goals that we set for ourselves." In addition, the committee found help and guidance from individuals within the administration who have had experience planning student events in the past.
For the committee members who helped plan the event, the sophomores' reaction proved to be the most rewarding part of the night. "Students came up to me and thanked me for all my help in planning such a beneficial event. They told me that they were exposed to industries that they never thought they would be interested in," says BBA President Joey Roth. From looking into the audience during the alumni speeches, it was clear that the students were very engaged and interested in what the alumni had to say. Alumni speakers included Gary Shuman from ePrize, Paul Mestemaker from Microsoft, Ethan Goodman from MARS Advertising, and Mary Hinesly, a veteran of the retail industry and current employee of the business school.
In the future, the Alumni Relations Committee vows to expand committee membership even further. In several weeks, Rosenhaus will step down from her position on SGA as the Alumni Relations Chairperson, and she says she hopes that someone on her committee will run in the election to succeed her. Even after her term ends, Amanda plans to remain the committee's president because, she says, "Planning this event was hard work, but it was a very rewarding experience, and something that I really loved doing." It is clear that the sophomores enjoyed attending this event as much as the committee enjoyed planning it.
