"Because we are a family and this is our family reunion."
This was the message keynote speaker and Ross Alum Ralph Johnson relayed to the attendees of the gala banquet at the 34th annual Alfred L. Edwards BBSA Conference last week. Mr. Johnson used elements of his business and personal journey to highlight the importance of the BBSA and BBSA alums to remain connected and close-knit as a family. "It is the prescription for success," he said.

The theme of this year's conference was "Leading the Way: Staying Competitive in a Changing Global Economy," and Mr. Johnson's powerful message was the capstone to a weekend of enlightening messages and thoughtful seminars and panels. Warren Brown, entrepreneur and Food Network Star, spoke at the luncheon, emphasizing the importance of following one's passion in business. His story, changing careers from a healthcare litigator for the US Government to successful baker and restaurateur, showed students that following a passion could be recipe for "sweet success."

This year's conference welcomed over 200 registrants from all parts of the University Michigan campus alongside alums and corporate sponsors from around the nation to partake in this successful weekend full of events. In addition to the two keynote addresses, the BBSA welcomed panelists from a myriad of careers for discussions and workshops to engage enlighten and prepare attendees for a successful career. The events fifteen corporate sponsors featured special events to get to know students and an ongoing partnership with admissions brought close to 20 prospective students to campus to get a snapshot of the Ross lifestyle. And of course there were the social events, from a classy welcome reception at the Museum of Art and a rocking after-party at Café Habana to close the weekend.
This year's conference was an event not to be missed.

Awards

As always, the BBSA used this conference to honor the life and career of the late Dr. Alfred L. Edwards. During the gala, Ross professor Dr. David Wooten painted a very vivid picture of his "friend and mentor" Dr. Edrwards, who had a 30-year career as an economics professor, BBSA advisor, and diversity advocate at Ross.
The Alum of the Year award was presented this year to Ralph Johnson. Ralph continues to be very active in the Ross School, serving not only on the Alumni Board of Governors, but as a tireless champion of the BBSA. All recent MBA classes have felt his impact as he has judged the last several years of "Grill for Glory" during the RLI foundation session.

Each year the BBSA also sponsors a case competition in association with the yearly conference. This year's winning team consisted of MBA1s from Section 3: Wade Rakes, Zeynab Diakite, Cragin Brown and Ben Martin. This team was chosen by Deloitte consultants as the tops of seven competing and won $3,000 worth of American Airlines travel vouchers for anywhere in the world. Congratulations!
